10/22 was composed for Daniel Druckman under part sponsorship from Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. during the summer of 1981. The bulk of the work was composed in Elsa, Texas while several colleagues and I were engaged by Handco Distributors, Inc. as consultants in ballistics research. While involved in this research, I became intrigued by certain data and felt that they could be transferred into a musical environment. The impetus for this work came from that assumption. The structural foundation of 10/22 is based on sonata form, but the historical implications of its use pertaining to tonality have been breached. The work is in three movements: Exposition, Development, and Recapitulation. The exposition contains 2 themes, 2 bridges and a codetta. The second movement consists of a development section, a chorale, and another development section. The third movement contains 2 themes, 2 bridges, a codetta, and a closing section. 10/22 is a 12-tone composition, as are all my works.
