B L A C K H A W K (a double concerto for Bass Clarinet, Trombone, and Chamber Orchestra) Thomas E. Barker The instrumentation for Blackhawk is bass clarinet and trombone solo, 2 flutes (one doubling piccolo, one doubling alto flute), 2 oboes (one doubling English horn), 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons; 8 violins, 6 violas, 5 violincellos, and 3 double basses. The concerto unfolds across three movements. The total duration of the piece is 14-1/2 minutes. The first movement is 7-1/2 minutes in duration. In this movement the solo instruments and the chamber orchestra exchange the 12-tone pitch material back and forth, setting up motivic fragments to be developed in the second movement by the solo instruments. The second movement is 4 minutes in duration. The bass clarinet and trombone perform a double cadenza made up of compound line. These instruments play alone as well, and at certain points are accompanied by the strings. The general outcome at the end of the movement is a resolution by both instruments into two central themes to be used in the third movement. The third movement is 3 minutes in duration. The movement bows to classical sonata form: introduction, first theme, bridges, second theme, bridge, and codetta; short development; recapitulation.
